State Recital Competition Information

All students who participate in the Piano Music Artistry Program (MAP) event are eligible to enter the State Recital Competition. This competition selects the EMTA Chapter Representatives to perform in the WSMTA State Conference Honors Recital (1 st place) and at the District 1 Honors Recital (Alternates). Please DO NOT ENTER this competition unless you intend to perform at the WSMTA convention. All Winners are also invited to perform at the EMTA Awards Gala in June.

The State Recital Competition celebrates the highest echelon of performance quality by students of teachers in the Edmonds Music Teachers Association. Being selected to perform at WSMTA State Conference or the District One Honors recital offers outstanding performance opportunities as official representatives of EMTA. Therefore, it is vital that entrants review ALL calendar dates involved with winning before registering. Winners are relied upon to be prepared and perform at the WSMTA State Conference or the District 1 Honors Recital.

Alternates are selected in case a competition Winner is unable to perform due to an emergency such as illness, injury, or a death in their family. In this case, the Winner must notify their teacher of the conflict as soon as possible. The teacher will contact the event chair, Mona Elsing, to arrange for an Alternate to step in. The original Winner and Alternate will then share the title of Winner in this event.

Winners who simply don’t show up or do not give 7 days’ notice when possible will lose their winner’s status (it will pass to the Alternate taking their place) and will be ineligible to participate in the State Recital Competition the following year.

Other Rules:

  • Age: Entrants must be under 19 years of age by June 30 of MAP event year.
  • The soloists will enter the competition with one piece performed from memory.
  • A teacher may enter a student in only one chapter’s State Recital Competition.
  • According to the state rule, each piece must fit into 5 minutes. Cuts are allowed.
  • Only original music is allowed; no revised or arranged pieces.
  • The order of performance will be determined by lottery at the EMTA February meeting.
  • Music substitutions may be made up to one week before the competition.
  • The performance piece does NOT need to be one of the pieces performed in the Music Artistry Program. However, the students who are selected at the State Recital Competition must perform their winning pieces in the State Conference Honors Recital and District I Honors Recital.
  • Please bring music to the competition, but do not put personal names.

Entry Fee: $35.00 (Non-Refundable)
