Dr. Richard Sparks will present an overview of the social and musical culture of the Baroque Era and the important musical developments, practices and aesthetics of that period. Here is information about Dr. Sparks:

Rick Asher lead the class participants in exploring and analyzing Baroque keyboard music that is suitable for use with students at all levels. Principle topics of study will include early and late Baroque counterpoint and harmonic practice; editing Baroque keyboard scores; teaching ornamentation, articulation and melodic elaboration; exploring portamento, thorough bass and common Baroque forms; and preparing students for performing Baroque music.
Teachers at all levels of theoretical and historical knowledge are welcome to participate and activities will be designed to inform and challenge the varyied levels of participants’ current knowledge of Baroque music. Suggestions for optional reading, listening and practicing Baroque compositional techniques will be offered for those wanting deeper immersion in the topics.
Tuition
● EMTA members: full tuition will paid with EMTA reserve funds, meaning that there is no cost to members.
● Non-EMTA members tuition: $300
Course will be limited to 25 participants.
Enrollment procedure
● Enrollment for EMTA members will open in December via Jotform on the EMTA website.
● Members who wish to participate are expected to commit to full and regular attendance, barring emergency absences.
● All participants will be asked to have a copy of the Willard A. Palmer edition of the Bach Inventions and Sinfonias, an Alfred Masterworks Edition.
● If EMTA members do not fill the class maximum enrollment, the course will be offered to members of other chapters.
● Non-EMTA members will register via jotform on the EMTA website: edmondsmusicteachers.org, and make an initial deposit of $100 with the remainder due February 16, 2027.
