2024 WSMTA Young Composer Project Winners List

EMTA Results

EMTA was well represented with 7 out of the 17 teachers coming from our chapter:  Marie Wollam-Mergler, Rose Freeman, Rick Asher, Kaitlin Wick, Carrie Kahler, Marilyn Droz and Frances Goei.  We had 3 first place winners.  This was a little lower than in the past due to the fact that students were not allowed to win 2 years in a row so a number of our students submitted for comment only or did not submit at all.  The 3 winners will play in the EMTA Gala Concert.

WSMTA Overall Results

The first emphasis in the Young Composers Project is that of educating our students in the field of musical composition.  This year, 53 compositions were submitted with a number of them being submitted “for comment only”.  A number of new teachers participated this year, which is always delightful.  A total of 17 teachers participated and judges have selected “winners” at each level, which are enclosed for your benefit.  A huge thanks to our wonderful panel of judges who have given amazing detailed comments to each composition.  Our judges are:  Rick Asher, Composer and Retired Professor of Music from Edmonds Community College; Dr. Terry McQuikin, Composer and Retired Professor of Music from University of Oregon; Dr. Jiyoun Chung, Composer and Professor of Music at Central Washington University; and Dr. Charles Halka, Composer and Associate Professor of Music at Western Washington University.

We look forward to hearing all the 1st place winners (or alternates) at the Washington State Music Teacher’s Association Conference YCP Recital scheduled for Friday, June 28, 2024 at 2:30 pm in Spokane.
