Curtain Raiser: Stan Watkins
Stan maintains an active studio of 40 students in North Kirkland. Previously, he served in Christian ministry in the Seattle area, Estonia, and England. Then, he operated a local moving service for six years. That may be a unique career path: ministry, moving company, musician. At the meeting, he will play “A Hermit Thrush at Eve,” (Op. 92, no. 1) by Mrs. H.H.A. (Amy) Beach. This piece contains exact notations of hermit thrush bird songs and on the first page she includes this verse by John Vance Cheney:
Holy, Holy... in the hush Hearken to the hermit thrush; All the air Is in prayer.
Presenter: Yelena Balabanova – “Q&A with Yelena”
Dr. Yelena Balabanova is an acclaimed soloist and is widely recognized for her extensive repertoire, original interpretations, innovative programs, and a sought-after clinician on healthy technique and artistry. We are fortunate to call her a part of our community here at EMTA! Read her full (and very impressive) bio here.
For October’s general meeting, Yelena will share her sources for repertoire ideas and her online teaching experience. Then she will lead a conversation of experiences and ideas – she asks that you bring any questions you may have about specific skills, a specific piece, ways to practice, parent/teacher relationship, general ideas, tips, tricks, etc.. Yelena is looking forward to seeing everyone and sharing her ideas!

October is EMTA Charter Anniversary Month! First EMTA President Carolyn Malnes (1989-1991) accepted the Chapter Charter on October 6, 1990 at the District I Conference held at Edmonds United Methodist Church. The EMTA Memories Scrapbook (1989-1998) will be available to see at this month’s membership meeting. Come check out a photocopy of the charter, pictures of charter members, and the program for the 1990 District I Conference!
The Charter Member signatures you might recognize are Carolyn Malnes, Judy Baker, Carolyn Lee, Marilyn Droz, Suzetta Glenn (Welcome Back, Suzetta!), Keva Vaughan McMorrow, and Debra DeMiero. EMTA has existed for 33 years (our 30th anniversary was celebrated at the Sept. 2019 General Meeting) and it’s been 32 years since we received our charter.
